Passirano is a commune (municipality) with a population of 7’000 inhabitants, located 7 km south of Lake Iseo in the Franciacorta region. The Parrocchiale di San Zenone in Via Libertà 2 was built on the historical ground of the former pilgrimage church San Rocco and was finished in 1903. Antonio Guadagnini was amongst the artists working on this church and helped giving it a beautiful facade.
The Franciacorta Region is the “Champagne” of Italy, with very good sparkling and still wines and you will find many beautiful historic vineyards here. There are as well many manor houses and castles. One of the most remarkable ones is the Passirano Castle. Built around 1100 a.D., it had a defensive function. It is worthwhile a visit, to look at from the outside and be fascinated by its round towers, like the Specola Tower (once an astronomic observatory) and the ways it has been built in general (trapezoidal ground plan). It is owned by the Marchesi Fassati di Balzola and in its cellars they keep wine of their very own vineyard.
Another place to visit is the Villa Fassati Barba built in the 18th century. It is a popular location for events like a festive banquet or a wedding. From the large garden area of this mansion it is possible to view the Passirano Castle and a little further on a hill there is the stately Villa la Tesea built in the 16th century.
